Interstate Seed Company
Interstate Seed Company
Started in 1917, by the Wilk and Gundelman Families, Interstate Seed served the upper Midwestern United states as a farm seed and car lot trading company. Interstate Seed remained a family owned corporation until purchased by VanderHave B.V. of the Netherlands in 1983, who through their international network had the ability to better expand Interstate's sales and expertise internationally. Sunflower acreage declined rapidly in the U.S. during the mid 1980's and the decision was made by VanderHave to purchase a U.S. based corn company. In 1988, Payco Seed Company was purchased and operated as a stand alone entity until 1991 when the two companies were merged forming Interstate Payco Seed Company. In 1997, VanderHave B.V. and Zeneca Ag combined their seed companies into a new company called Advanta with parent companies maintaining a 50-50 ownership of Advanta. On January 1, 2000, one corporate company was established in the United States for all of the Advanta Companies. The new company is Advanta USA, Inc. which Interstate Seed is a business unit of. Other Advanta business units are Garst/AgriPro and AgriPro Wheat.
